CBD and Skin Care

As CBD (cannabidiol) conquers the natural skincare market, consumers have valid questions about its potential benefits and uses. Studies have shown that CBD presents numerous health benefits and medicinal properties, treating chronic pain and clearing acne at the same time.

CBD is a powerful skincare tool, providing an over-the-counter solution to ongoing problems like eczema and psoriasis. It contains antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging components. Antioxidant properties fight to neutralize free radicals in the body. Anti-inflammatory properties reduce redness and irritation. Finally, anti-aging properties smoothen wrinkles and support a youthful appearance. A naturally derived benefit of the Hemp plant, CBD is finally gaining notoriety for it's healing properties. Much like other industry shaking skin care icomponents like coconut oil, aloe vera, mirula oil, and tea tree oil, CBD is a safe and natural way to target skin imperfections and overall health.

According to Jeanette Jacknin, a board-certified dermatologist specializing in topical cannabinoids in skin care, studies have shown that “affecting the endocannabinoid system — like with CBD — can help the skin look more radiant and youthful,” and referenced a study suggesting that CBD could slow down the visible signs of aging in mice. Tamás Bíró, professor and chair of the Department of Immunology at University of Debrecen in Hungary, is also the director of applied research at Phytecs, a company researching and developing drugs affecting the endocannabinoid system. “CBD has anti-inflammatory actions,” he says, which can be helpful for conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema. Bíró also conducted cell model research (as opposed to human testing, which has not yet been approved) that showed CBD inhibited sebum production and normalized overactive sebaceous gland cells — one of the main causes of acne.

Important Nutrients in CBD

Perhaps the most important thing to note about CBD is the sheer number of vitamins it holds. Once you apply CBD to your skin, your body will experience the benefits of these vitamins, including:

  • Vitamins A and D - Both vitamins are responsible for repairing the skin. Vitamin A, in particular, is important for skin cell growth, oil inhibition, and skin cell differentiation. If your skincare regimen and/or diet currently lacks these vitamins, you may be suffering from dry or flaky skin
  • Vitamins C and E - These vitamins function as antioxidants, protecting your skin against sun, wind, smoke, and other environmental damage. They also protect your tight skin and youthful appearance from free radicals that seek to destroy it.
  • B-Complex Vitamins - Responsible primarily for skin reconstruction, these vitamins protect from conditions like dermatitis. Rather than investing in a vitamin supplement, apply topical CBD on a nightly basis.
  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 - These fatty acids work to regenerate the protective layer of your skin, ultimately creating a smoother and more youthful appearance. If you lack access to omega fatty acids, you likely suffer from frequent acne and dry skin.
